How to Audit an Extension Socket Factory in China — A Practical Checklist

Guanglong Electric Technical Team · Updated 2026-10-20

A socket factory audit = three desk checks + six floor stations + four documents + four red flags. Finish with the five-minute traceability test: pick any carton and ask the factory to trace it back to its QC record. If they can, the system is real. If they cannot, the rest of the tour was decoration.

1. Before You Fly: Three Desk Checks

  1. Business licence scope. Does it include manufacturing of electrical appliances, or only wholesale/trade?
  2. Certificate ownership. Are UKCA/CE/BS 1363 certificates registered to the factory's own name? Get the certificate number and verify it on the certifier's website.
  3. Export history. Customs records and customer references show real production volume.

2. On-Site: Six Stations

  1. Injection workshop. Are the moulds in-house? In-house moulds control batch-to-batch consistency; market-bought housings cannot.
  2. Assembly lines. How many lines, how many workers, and what is running today. No live production of your category means it is likely outsourced.
  3. Wire & cable workshop. Ask one question: is the cord made in-house or bought? An in-house cable shop (drawing, stranding, insulation extrusion) means conductor spec and insulation quality are controlled in-house, not outsourced. Our cords are made in our own workshop.
  4. QC stations (the heart of the audit). Hi-pot testers, earth continuity test, fuse presence checks, cord pull tests — plus a written AQL standard (commonly 1.0 major / 1.5 minor) with recent inspection records.
  5. Laboratory. Surge, aging and temperature-rise capability separates engineering-driven makers from assemblers.
  6. Warehouse. Finished goods should be batch-coded. Then run the five-minute traceability test — one carton, back to its QC record.

3. Four Documents to Request

  1. ISO 9001 certificate — verify scope and validity on the certifier's website, not on their wall.
  2. Product test reports — model numbers must match what you are buying.
  3. Component certificates for fuses, shutters and cables (fuses approved to BS 1362 by a third party — ASTA or BSI Kitemark; see our BS 1363 guide).
  4. Recent third-party inspection reports — read the failures, not just the pass.

4. Four Red Flags

  • Photos of a different factory's gate on the wall.
  • "Our sister factory makes this part" — for every process downstream of injection.
  • Test equipment covered in dust, unplugged, or missing entirely.
  • Refusal to let you photograph QC records or run the traceability test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I audit a Chinese socket factory remotely?

Partially. A live video walk-through of the QC floor, live lines and a traceability demo covers most of it. What it cannot replace is verifying the facility belongs to the company you are paying.

What AQL standard should an extension socket factory run?

AQL 1.0 major / 1.5 minor is the common baseline. More important than the number: the factory can show recent inspection records matching it.

Should certificates be registered in the factory's own name?

Yes. Certificates in the factory's own legal name prove the tests ran on its own products. Borrowed certificates are a red flag — check the registered address matches the site.

How long does a proper factory audit take?

About half a day: two hours across the six stations, one hour on documents, plus the five-minute traceability test.

What are the biggest red flags in a factory audit?

Photos of a different factory's gate; "sister factory" answers for every process; dusty or unplugged QC equipment; refusal to show QC records or run the traceability test.

Is buying from a trading company always a mistake?

No. Some traders add real value in design and packing. What matters is who injects the parts and whose name is on the certificates — accountability, not company type.
